Popularity of the Star Wars movies, according to twitter

Six days ago @lordpalpatine startet a project on twitter. The goal was to decide which Star Wars movies are most/least popular among the fans.

More information about the whole process later, here are the results:

6. Episode II: Attack of the Clones

5. Episode I: The Phantom Menace

4. Episode III: Revenge of the Sith

Note: it took Episode III 40 minutes to get more retweets than episodes I and II got in 24 hours.

3. Episode IV: A New Hope

Note: It took Episode IV seven hours to get more retweets than Episode III did in 24.

2. Episode VI: The Return of the Jedi

Note: It took Episode VI four hours to get more retweets than Episode III got in 24 hours

1. Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back

Note: It took Episode V 16 minutes to get more retweets than Episode II got in 24 hours.
It took Episode V a little less than two hours to get more retweets than Episode IV got in 24 hours.

Some information:

Every tweet was given 24 hours, give or take a few minutes, before the screenshot is taken. I didn’t tweet anything else for approximately 16 hours on that account.
I chose to tweet around 23:20 (11:20 PM) Central European Time, to maximize the audience worldwide. I mention the official @starwars account in every tweet, hoping they would retweet and thereby increase the audience significantly (they didn’t).

The screenshots are taken on favstar.fm, a website which tracks your received retweets and favorites better than twitter itself does. Although it’s not 100% accurate, it’s far better than twitter’s own solution, which stops counting at 50.

No big surprises in the result, although I personally expected Return of the Jedi to be below A New Hope. Considering twitter has users of all ages, I was interested in seeing how the individual movies would do against each other, and how the prequel trilogy would do against the original trilogy.

A lot of people keep asking me to follow them. A lot of people are ignored.

So how do I choose who to follow?

1. I must notice you. There are several ways to do this.

Have an interesting twitter picture.
@ mention me. (No, “follow me” isn’t enough)
Retweet and/or favorite if you enjoy a tweet. Most of the people I have started following lately have been because of this.

2. Have an interesting bio. Most of the people I follow have something in their bio that makes me think it would be worth it, and want to know more.

3. Tweet content. If you tweet about things I want to read about, your chances improve. If you tweet only about what you had for dinner, where you are and how your hemorrhoids feel today, they don’t.

4. Tweet frequency. If I have to scroll down 3 pages to find a tweet from an hour ago, chances are I won’t click that follow button. @ replies not included.

Now you’re asking yourself “why would I care about all these things just for Palpatine?”.

Because I have a giant space station orbiting your planet. What do you have?
